How to Maximize your WiFi with Multi-Gig Switches

I'm always happy to be here and appreciates your support absolutely well. Today we're talking about maximizing your Wifi with multi gig switches. But first John, apologize if if this seems kind of feel a little bit removed medial, but I'm going to be the every man here and and needs some layman's explanation of multi gig equipment. So multi gig is Gig a bit or Gigabyte. They're they're not the same thing right. No, and that that is the first thing to think about. It's it's so confusing and it's confusing because manufacturers, not just us but in the cable products at home things like that, often use them interchangeably and they use one for one description one for another. So the biggest difference is a bit is one little piece of information and a bite is eight pieces of that. So bite contains eight bits. So when you're trying to figure out speed wise things like that, we're talking about multi gigabits or multi gigabytes, four flight file downloading. They talk about gigabytes often, but for Internet speed and talking about gigabits per second, and we talked about that in our our products as well. So there is a difference and it's eight times a difference sometimes, so it's a pretty big deal. Yeah, that's quite a difference. So we were seeing commercials now for one GIG Internet for consumers and what's what's possible with that, emphasizing that speed. But what about most businesses? I mean, is one GIG speed for businesses the majority, or is uh, multi gig and more of its early adoption? Yeah, you know, we have the legacy of all these networks around every business and every home for that matter too. But for businesses the one GIG Internet was fine. You added phones to that void, phones in the recent past, although I guess it's been a while now, and that up the anti a little bit, with some data going across this networks, more than just a file transfer or an email here and there. And that's all burstea traffic. That's all just a quick little burst. Get this. But when you start adding things like streaming video on these networks, you want my conference room camera to be on the Internet to be able to fluide my...

...remote employees for this new hybrid workspace, well, that's a lot of data and that can't you want that to blip like our podcast. You want to have that be seamless. So you need to most likely upgrade your network. Ten gig a bit is now more of a standard for office networks versus the one Gig a bit, and there's plenty of products out there. The copper itself or fiber connections have gone down, so it isn't as cost prohibited now to really upgrade your network to that. And then we can talk about all the devices in between from coming in the building and spreading it all across the network to right, right. So you're saying that that ten gigs is becoming more of the standard. So playing the troubleshooter here. So I know that our business here has multi gig internet from our I S P, but it just doesn't feel that fast. I'm sure that that's a concern that you hear and looking for for answers. So I guess what is your answer to that? You know, how how do you explain that? Just because you have, you know, this multi Gig, you know Internet from your I sp, that doesn't thatesn't necessarily your mean. You're you're giving that you know. Why does it not feel fast? Yeah, so a couple more things we should talk about with that. Shall Be. One is that in really define like multi gig. So let's go back to that for a second. Multi gig obviously more than one gigabit per second. So it can be two and a half as a standard. Often you standard five, ten, forty up a hundred hundred gigs, depending on what you're doing with networks. So when we talk about multi Gig and are like neck gear's multi gig a bit switches. There are switches that can handle that traffic. So you have coming into your building let's say two gigabit fiber from whoever. I'm not going to mention their names. Great, so that switched coming in after that Modem or whatever, the devices that you have from that Internet service provider. Maybe that's coming into gigabits. But if you're switched now is only one Gig a bit, you're not going to get that potential. It's right away. It's just a bottleneck right there. It's it's pretty simple. So your switch needs to be able to handle that by of being a multi gig switch capable of accepting that higher gigabit input and then also distributing that around your network. Then and that's so. Then the next part of that is distributing around your network. So you're probably using Wifi for a lot of your stuff, as I am. I'm completely wireless in my Home Office. So just because it has coming into the office to your modem and then to a switch where you may have your computer plugged in or your TV or something else, or your phones, if you're in an office situation, then you have your wireless access points. So all of neck gears, wireless access points have varying speeds and things. Our newest ones, which is Wifi six technology, great coverage, great speed, but on the switch, on the access point itself, needs to be a high enough bandwidth. The multi Gigabit port, which is for our access points, is to a half gigabits. So between that access point distributing the wireless signal and your switch you have a highly fast, very fast connection to a half gig connection. And that means then once you get to your your tablet, your phone, even your laptop, if you're working out in the backyard...

...or somewhere like I do every now and then, you're going to get the fastest speed because your connection to the access points fast, but then the access point back to the switch is also fast, and that's for multi Gig a bit really plays a big role. So if I'm understanding it right, then so you know, there are a lot of pieces in there that may have limiting things that that do end up inadvertently bottlenecking things. Probably one of the, maybe more the common ones that you see is if you're using kind of your provided router by the I S P, that that's uh, that's quite possibly limiting things right. Yeah, and and often you know that that may be mashed up to the Internet speed coming in, but the wireless may maybe the weak part there, and they go through some rigorous testing and everything else to make sure it works, sir, but they're not always on the bleeding edge that we are, and bleeding edge can sometimes mean oh, it's just not not that good. But nickyear really has its own team of wireless engineers that really are on the edge trying to make sure that we take advantage of all the new things come along. So yes, you may have your I s, t s, router or modem and that works great. But then you can easily add another wireless network, even if you already have one in your house, and that's fine for all of your home connections, great of your family, but for a separate wireless network, you can plug in really quickly a wireless access point, one of our essentials line, and have a separate home network. That's Wifi six. It's brand new, just for your work environment. Same thing goes for an office too. You can have one for your guests, uh, separate network for that and separate network for your office employees, and those are really easy to set up and then you can add it on to your existing Modem router if you don't want to to, you know, change up that situation. Yeah, so that gear does have have these products that that are more bleeding edge and able to take full advantage of the spece that are out there. And there's a lot of pieces in there. There's a lot of pieces that you know that need to be looked at to make sure that that those are of the latest and greatest. So can we go over some of those potential bottlebecks that are some of the most common that you see? Yeah, I mean, we talked about that whole throughput that whole path, I guess, and it's hard on a podcast. I'm showing you with my hands but you can't see them. So you know, the Modem and routers the first thing, and we do make those as well. We make cable modems and cable routers. But for a business you're just gonna come in and have that provided router, most likely, and then right away you want to look at the switch and that's the first point where a bottleneck could occur. So the multi gig switch is has a lot of features besides just the multi gig part, but it will have ports that can adapt automatically to what's plugged in. So sometimes if you don't have that and you have a fast one fast advice and another advice is slower, it's gonna bring everything down to the lowest common denominator. So that's why you want to make sure these multi gig ports are capable of several different speeds and we have a lot of different switches. We have hundreds of switches to be honest. ...dot com slash multi Dash Gig. But that tells you that some of these are five speed switches, some are two speeds whitches. Depends on what you're using with all the equipment. But you can also ask us and help us figure out what's right for you. That's the first point, right there. Switch when it's coming in, and then, like we talked about, you're probably gonna have wireless. So you're wireless access point is gonna be the next one and you might think, Oh, I just have some wireless, I don't care how fast it is. My connection to the access points fast. That's close enough. But if you start adding two or three access points, as I mentioned before, and be one in the lobby for your customers, maybe one in the back office for your office customers, or it's a dental practice or whatever. You may have more than one access point and if those are three gigabits per second, you know higher faster connections, three times two or six. There's six, but all of a sudden, I mean even one of them with two gigabits per second, you're gonna be up pretty pretty high and be using all that bandwidth. So you want to be able to spread that out and make sure that everybody's can action is going to be fast enough. So making sure again, the multi gig switch is going to be your key item there for that. and Um, I think we've talked about this on the podcast before, but you know also the belief with wireless that you know, the more wireless access points the better isn't necessarily the case, right. Yeah, and you know, certainly it depends on the access points in some ways, but coverage. But you may have some people competing for bandwidth, writing competing for that airspace. So we take great pride in our our access points and the INTENNA design things like that, and also being able to hand you off between access points. But in general you don't need to put four access points in a small area. One really good one and that may be worth the investment of okay, forty more dollars or fifty more dollars to get a better access point. That is Wifi six. That enables more people. Has a new channel. So typically we have two point four GIGA hurts. You know here talking about Multi Gig. Now we have GIGGA hurts and we'll go into their different podcasts. But we have two point four GIGA hurts, five giga hurts bands. Those are the bands your phone or your devices will operate on in the radio frequency. And now Wifi six e enables a new six Giga hurts band. So now, if you take advantage of the newest technology, you can have all your existing devices beyond the bands that need to be on like two point four Giga hurts for your doorbell or for Iot sort of things. But then your phone is going to be probably relatively new. Well, maybe that could use the new six gigure hurts fan or a template. So as you start buying more robust and say more newer, newer products, that can have that newer technology and maybe you don't need it right now, but next year, you can upgrade your phone so that will take that phone off those other bands and be able to have it on its own frequency band and that will allow more people to have more access. So even in like a university setting or a lobby of a hotel or something like that, these are prime having the proper access point for that and certainly have the coverage too to maximize the stace most important too. But it's a number...

...of users that can connect and the bands that are available for those users to connect. Those are all things to consider things. Yeah, well, looking at this problem of bottlenecks and businesses that are maybe becauld, you know this is you know say that there is an ingram micro reseller that's listening and you know they've heard from their customers. You know those challenges that you know, I don't know how good my equipment is. It feels like I'm not getting the most out of it that I that I should be. Doesn't feel that fast, all of those kind of common symptoms that you'll hear. Can you talk about how common, then, this bottleneck problem is? Is it something that you know if you walked into nine out of ten businesses, uh, they are probably somehow limiting what type of bandwidth or getting because of equipment. Yeah, I'm not sure. If it's not in a ten if I really have a good idea that, to be honest, I'll be it's a lot, let's just say, because you know, as a business, you don't want to send money you don't have to, for sure. So upgrading your network. When the network works, it's a little slow sometimes and that's okay, but you know to really maximize your productivity and if you are about to do some kind of upgrade, well that's the time to really make that investment. So I'll bet you half the businesses, three cores of the businesses. People would talk to your Ingram micro customers, three cores and then could probably use some sort of an upgrade. And whether that's g let's read your entire network, let's get fiber in there across the network, let's keep you upgraded to ten gig awesome, or it's just simply updating your access points or a switch or two and make sure that that is enabling you to do your work faster and easier. Right, well, so what else is important to understand about multi gig switch? Isn't the difference between a multi gig and a single gig switch. I think we kind of covered that. I think having the ability to operate in multiple speeds allows you to maximize each devices potential more than just a flat, certainly lower speed and one gig switch. And just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's gonna be not the most robust either. We make some inexpensive switches, I should say, because cheap is different than inexpensive. We make some switches that are a really amazing value. We just came out with one recently that's an unmanaged multi gig switch, Ms One, oh eight up and also offers Poe. We didn't talk about Poe either. So we're realizing that multi GIG is kind of new in the marketplace still. People are trying to understand it. That's why we're here today help to understand that. But it doesn't mean like you have to spend gobs of money to try to upgrade that part of right away. You can see a difference and somebodyse are just the unmanaged, which is are just plug it in, turn it on and forget about it. Nothing to you need to do. And they even off of Poe, like I say, which is pretty cool. Too, if you want to stop up. Certainly we have other switches that will give you some management and uh messing with your Poe plus devices, which can be an access point too, and that's part of the puzzle. With a multi gig switch and a WIFI access point, it's P oe. You have the...

...one cable, one ethernet cable goes between the switch and the access point, so you can deploy those much faster and much easier. You get the benefits of multi GIG technology for a fast connection from your access point back to your switch, back to your modem or router, and also the power single cable P oe, which is you know, that's huge. and Poe is power over either neet, right, rct. Sorry. Yes, there's different forms of that. We could do a whole podcast on Po Week. Maybe we should do that sometime. Actually, yeah, there's different kinds of power over ethernet and there's some things that people get stumbled uh, you know, get sometimes. Sometimes we're talking about Poe, but there's products require a certain amount of power. So there's different classes of Poe and you might have heard of pee, Your Poe Plus, pee plus plus. You're like, is that a Typo? No, there's actually a plus plus. So depending on those devices, what an access point needs to power itself, you can get a switch that has poe plus plus up to sixty watts or up to ninetts power on a single port. And then you look at how many devices you're powering with that device and there's your Poe budget as well. So there's all that kind of stuff to think about. We have we have all kinds of Info on the website for that stuff if you want to figure it out, and we can do a podcast. Yeah, well, and and so the range again, if we're talking about, you know, smb small businesses, maybe they're brick and mortar, maybe they're not, but let's let's use brick and mortar as an example, that Poe, the plus plus, might be as high as you know what product down to the regular Poe that powers what? I guess you know of those examples in a in a small business setting. Yeah, so those examples are widening daily. So it can be monitors. Thin labs is one of the partners of ours that we actually used to in some trade shows recently. It's a computer all on one computer looks like a Imac, if you will. It's all on one that's powered by Poe. That's going to require your highest amount of Poe, Poe plus plus. I don't have the exact numbers. Pee Lighting, a lot of LB lighting now is a lot lower power, a lot lower wattage, less power, so that can be even pee plus. But a lot of lighting in offices is now being powered that way as well. Speakers are another example. In the A V world. For sure, if you're doing multicasting video and audio, some of the devices in your conference room, the encoders and decoders, could be Poe powered and those probably require the higher amount of Poe plus plus. But that's changing too. Is Chip sets are getting more efficient. Some technologies like software defined video of Ethernet is a mouthful. St v O E is a type of a v over Ip. Can't say it's a standard, but it's a type of a V over. At p they have come out with their own chips. So now requires a lot less power. So now, instead of having a power supply for each one of those encoders decoders, it can be powered by Poe and buy a lot less than the Poe plus plus, so you may have a more budget left over for other devices. But those are some of the typical advices. Phones are a good example. Too...

...often the v I P phones, the Cisco phones are, well, I shouldn't use that name, Huh, competitor those phones. So everybody's had in their office for so long. Those are powered by Poe. Those are ethernet phones. You have one cable one. You know you don't have a power supply for those phones. So those are also pee power. So it's clear that this isn't a simple subject matter. There's a lot to consider it, a lot of variables and a lot of technology that that fits into it. So for a listener that is an ingram micro reseller and they're looking for help on these types of things, what resources are available? That's great. So, but there's a lot of resources. I mean you can just blindly search the Internet and you're never quite sure of that caliber of that research, of course. But Um, a couple of things. So neckgear has some good landing pages. I mentioned that multi Gig page earlier. Nextyear, dot com slash multi Dash Gig. It's good. Same thing for Poe neckgear. Dot Com Slash Poe. It's even easier. So those will give you some basic info about what it is and also what of our products are appropriate for certain settings in certain situations. And then also netgear has an academy called Netgear Dot Academy. That's the U R L NO DOT COM Netgear Dot Academy, and you have courses in there. We do a lot of a view over I p work for PRO A v. We also have some general business courses on networking concepts and there's some stuff on Poe. There's, I think, a course in multi Gig and some other things in there as well, and you can sign up for free. You can browse for free without an account. Sign up for free and you can take those courses and I think goes give you a really good kind of high end idea of what these topics are about. Excellent. Well, you've been on the show before, so you know our our final question and that's where do you see technology going in the next year? So so pull out that crystal ball, John, and tell us. You know what are you keeping an eye on, you know, for this year? Yeah, that's that's always a good question. I'm really glad you asked that, because it's it's hard to tell. Nobody can tell the future. So since we're talking a multigig and Poe. I mean we really see a lot of growth in those markets because with Poe you don't need electrician to install a lot of products as well. So it's really helping out installers integrators, allowing people to really put things where they want to without having to have a power supply nearby. So we're seeing a big up tickets. So we're coming out with more PO E plus and Poe plus plus switches, and then multi Gig the same way, because all the speeds are getting faster and faster. It's not going to slow down, it's only gonna go faster. So we see a big market and multi Gig for sure, and for us as a company really you'll see to focus on the other switches and UH and the wireless access plants. Well, excellent, John.
